Did you know that there are over 115 different bird species that have been observed in RTP? Starting tomorrow, you’ll have a great reason to get outside and see some yourself! The 15th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is coming up, February 17-20. This project is one of the largest, most enjoyable citizen-science projects on the planet and this year should be especially interesting because of the warmer temperatures and lack of snowfall that we’ve experienced this winter.

The buzz around plug-in electric vehicles has been livelier than ever in North Carolina, and RTP is certainly becoming a hub of activity for the technology. RTI unveiled two new electric vehicle charging stations back in November, and just this past Tuesday, Biogen Idec held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for ten new electric vehicle charging stations at its RTP campus.

Iberdrola Renewables has placed its $600m Desert Wind project on hold in North Carolina, saying it cannot proceed unless utilities enter into a long-term deal to purchase the planned 300MW of power
The move is a setback for the developer, local officials, property owners around Elizabeth City, near the Atlantic coast, and Governor Bev Perdue, who viewed the project as one of the most promising for bringing wind power to the southeast state.
Perdue, a Democrat, is seeking a second four-year term in November and has emerged as a leading supporter of renewable energy in North Carolina.

North Carolina's first solar-powered charging stations were installed in December. In Asheville, Biowheels Responsible Transportation and their partners installed the first of four planned public solar charging installations. In Raleigh, Progress Energy and the City of Raleigh unveiled two solar stations to be used in a two-year research project.

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are on their way to the North Carolina marketplace, and public and private sector leaders have been working hard to be ready for them. The PEV Task Force is collaborating to ensure that North Carolina is a leader in PEV adoption and industry development.

Keep NC Beautiful, in partnership with the N.C. Coca-Cola Bottlers Council, is now accepting grant applications for projects to be completed in 2012 that address litter prevention, cleanup, waste reduction, recycling and beautification.

All 397 national parks across the country will offer free admission from Jan. 14-16 to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The free admission applies to 14 parks in North Carolina including the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk. A list of activities can be found at the National Parks website.

Raleigh—For the fifth time in a row since Governor Perdue vetoed the controversial energy bill that lays the groundwork for onshore and offshore drilling, House leaders threatened an override--this time in the wee morning hours of an unrelated special session--but failed to deliver.
“Rep. Mike Hager and his pro-drilling and pro-fracking allies are starting to sound like the boy who cried wolf on this one,” said Elizabeth Ouzts, Environment North Carolina Director. “I'm hopeful they’ll let this terrible idea go.”
